Bedrock’s 2021 Public Benefit Report

At Bedrock, it is our mission to explore the unexplored oceans and to seek understanding in the world beneath the surface. We are a Public Benefit Corporation with a goal to provide seafloor data to the public that is currently inaccessible. By sharing this information at a global scale, we hope to be the bedrock for the ocean technology of the future, for climate models that will better predict disaster, saving lives, and supporting a faster transition to renewable energy worldwide. More broadly we think the future involves a blue-centric economy, where much of the critical infrastructure needed to support life will involve the ocean in some capacity.

I’m proud to present our annual Public Benefit Report for 2021, detailing the progress we’ve made toward enabling greater public access to seafloor data. This past year, our team has made significant progress in efforts to gather public data and improve the processing tools we use to interpret that data.

Despite everything we accomplished last year, this is just the beginning and dwarfs the public data that is already out there. In 2022, we will focus on improving visualization and processing power in Mosaic™. We plan to collect and process more public data and improve the tools available to work with, and access that data. We will begin surveying the ocean floor with our own vehicles for companies that need highly detailed seafloor maps (often yesterday) and we will play an important role in the offshore renewable energy shift, which is a critical component to decarbonizing the world’s energy supply.

Our global leaders recently met at the G20 Summit and COP26 to discuss how to solve our climate crisis. Reducing emissions by 2030 was a top item on the agenda. The Biden Administration has taken this one step further by pledging to deploy 30,000 Megawatts of offshore wind by 2030, a move that will advance efforts to move the United States off fossil fuels. Expedited surveys of the seafloor in preparation for wind farm development is a near-impossible task with our current survey systems where hard drives of data are shipped for months at a time, serially between parties. But with Mosaic™, our cloud-based data platform, and our autonomous underwater survey vehicles, ultimately providing licensable data far ahead of traditional processes, we will dramatically improve the rate wind farms may be able to be deployed. Survey acquisition can happen much faster with much less red tape and, once complete, every team in the data lifecycle will be able to manage, access, and share their data across the entire ecosystem of Mosaic™ and beyond.

This is the year that we will improve our understanding of the Earth’s greatest natural resource. This is the year Bedrock becomes a change-maker for our society and for our oceans. We are a group of explorers, engineers, and environmental enthusiasts and we are committed to building solutions to unanswered questions for the future of our planet to further sustain life for many years to come.

It is our honor to present our 1st annual public benefit report:
