Bedrock’s 2022 Public Benefit Report
There is incredible opportunity and joy in building a business that the world needs. However, we believe there is even more value and opportunity in being able to raise the world’s collective understanding of the most critical ecosystem on the planet… at the same time. There is a reason the first thing we look for when we are searching for life is water. Oceans are considered the creator and sustainer of life, and we still do not actually have a true baseline understanding of several aspects of it. We think this is broken.
2022 marked a unique year because human’s relationship with nature is clearly changing rapidly. It is now without debate that we need to understand what is actually happening to our planet rapidly. We’re going to need new infrastructure, resources, and general monitoring to make the right changes quickly and responsibly. Last year this was especially apparent. On top of all of that, last year we entered into a global energy crisis.
So in response, we are deploying new Gigawatt-scale renewable infrastructure, very close to metropolitan regions the last place we have space left - the ocean. The intention is to decarbonize and provide grid redundancy to our highest energy-consuming areas within a 5-year period of time. Offshore wind is the only renewable technology that will allow this quickly, at scale, at the right price. Grid-scale offshore wind farms are now a reality, and we now have the expertise to deploy it reliably. This means we can actually decarbonize a significant portion of our energy consumption within a reasonable period of time (something that we are running out of).
This means there is new attention on the seafloor, in much larger areas than ever before, all at the same time, globally. With new subsea electrical cables and larger generators being installed on top of the seabed - new opportunities and challenges are emerging. Rapid access to seafloor data is one of them. Bedrock has been fortunate enough to be a highly scaleable, and ethical way to accelerate the rate we can acquire and use this data.
We are a public benefit corporation because we believe that by providing a better, easier-to-access, and free “baseline” of the ocean floor, not only do we increase our ability to do more with the ocean, but we can do it faster and increase the general desire for more, higher quality data. A needed supply and demand flywheel that currently doesn’t exist. This isn’t just good for the planet (and therefore the human race). Frankly, it’s good for business too.
At Bedrock, it is our mission to solve the ocean exploration problem and further support the human-ocean relationship.
We’re proud to be releasing our 2022 Public Benefit Report.
We highlight how we are advancing our goal to provide the world with a free, medium-resolution map of the seafloor. By sharing this information at a global scale, we hope to be the “bedrock” for any ocean information, infrastructure, and technology advancements required for the future of humanity on earth.
To the depths, and beyond,
- Team Bedrock.
